Fountain of Shame - Piazza Pretoria

Italy, Palermo

Description:

The fountain in Pretoria Square is an architectural monument of the XVI century and part of the architectural ensemble of the square in the Baroque style. The fountain is also called the Fountain of Shame, because of the naked appearance of the sculptures of the people who are part of the composition.

The ministers of the church, located opposite, gave the go-ahead to the construction of the fountain, as the coolness of the fountain in the hot climate of Palermo will not hurt anyone. However, after the construction of the fountain and the installation of figures of naked gods, people were outraged. The fountain was not demolished, and people going to church for service either turned away from it, or renounced themselves in shame. Thus, the fountain received a second name, which has remained until now and attracts tourists with its history and appearance.
