Sea Square
Description:
Piazza Marina or the sea square in Palermo is one of the largest in this city. It is located on the south side of the natural harbor, next to the Calsa quarter. This square in the Middle Ages was used as an arena for knightly tournaments, a platform for theatrical performances, fairs and public performances. The Piazza Marina held royal wedding celebrations. In 1679, to celebrate the marriage of Mary Louise and Charles II, wooden platforms were built on the square, intended for theater performances. In the center of the square is the Garibaldi Garden, in which magnolias, ficuses and fig trees have been growing for decades. Now these trees have grown to enormous sizes. The garden is surrounded by a grate of cast iron, which is decorated with figures of animals and birds. In the center of the garden there is a fountain and two monuments - to the Italian leader Garibaldi and Benedetto de Lisi.
