Norman Castle

Piazza Indipendenza, 1, 90129 Palermo, Italy

Description:

Norman Castle (aka Palazzo Normanni) was the residence of the Sicilian kings. The hill on which the castle is located, due to its strategic importance, has always been occupied by one or another bastion. In different centuries, Phoenicians, Romans, Arabs were housed here. With the hands of the latter, the masterpiece Emir Palace was erected, which is a standard of Moorish architecture. Subsequently, the palace was captured by the Normans, who restored it to their taste and turned it into the residence of the Spanish monarchs. Four towers were added to the royal palace, but only one of them - the Pisa (or St. Nintha) - has survived.

Today, Norman Castle is a museum. The greatest interest among tourists is the Palatine Chapel.
