The New Gate

Via Vittorio Emanuele, 477, 90134 Palermo, Italy

Description:

The New Gate in Palermo was built in 1583 to commemorate the victory of Charles V over the Turks in the Tunisian War. The construction of the gate is built in the style of a triumphal arch, with a pompous superstructure and rich external decoration. The gate is next to the Norman Palace and is the entrance to the historic city centre.

In 1667, the construction of the gate was completely destroyed by an explosion of gunpowder, but after two years it was exactly restored. The facade of the gate is decorated with various decorative elements and sculptures of Atlanteans, symbolizing the Moors, who were defeated by Charles V. The roof of the gate is made in the form of a pyramid, which is decorated with an eagle drawing from colored ceramic mosaics.
