St. Rosalee Rock Church

Monte Pellegrino, 90146 Palermo, Sicily, Italy

Description:

On the beautiful mountain of Monte Pellegrino, the view from which once struck the imagination of the great writer Johann Goethe, stands the church of St. Rosalia - the patroness of the city of Palermo. According to legend, the saint lived her life in the eleventh century, but the location of the burial of her relics for a long time remained a mystery. The mystery was revealed in the sixteenth century, when Palermo was struck by an epidemic of plague. St. Rosalia appeared in a dream, first to a sick woman and then to a hunter. She gave orders to transfer her relics to the center of the affected city. When they did, the plague left Palermo. Immediately after this, the saint was canonized, her relics were transferred to silver rak, and a church was built for their eternal burial. Today, the Church of St. Rosalia is very popular with local residents.
