Palermo

Montreal Cathedral

Piazza Duomo, 1, Palermo, Italy

Description:

Young King William II the Good in a dream appeared the Virgin and pointed out the place where his father hid the greatest treasures. It was for this money, as well as for significant funds of the royal treasury, that the Cathedral in honor of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin was founded in Montreal.

Beautiful legend did not save the city, at the beginning of the XIX century the Cathedral experienced two major disasters - lightning damaged the southern tower, just four years later as a result of a fire was completely destroyed a unique ceiling made by Arab masters. After a while, the canvas was restored.

Today, the main attraction of the cathedral are mosaics of the Byzantine period. They cover the inner walls of the holy monastery. The total area of the mosaic and the uniqueness of the ornaments make this canvas one of the largest mosaic cycles in the world.
