Heart of the Vatican - St. Peter's Cathedral
Description:
St. Peter's Cathedral is one of the greatest temples of the Christian world. Its construction will begin in the Renaissance and be completed in the height of the Baroque, eleven architects, among them Raphael, Michelangelo, Bernini, and nineteen Popes for a hundred and twenty years will devote all their energies and thoughts to the creation of this temple, and finally, its dome will rise above Rome, becoming a new symbol of the Eternal City.
The exterior and interior decoration of the Cathedral amazes with splendor, luxury and deep symbolism. Michelangelo’s Pieta is here, making him famous in one day. Above the Papal altar reigns the canopy of Bernini, and in the depths of the absid one can see one of his best creations: the Cathedral of St. Peter. Like a carpet, the floor is decorated with ornaments of colored marble, and the amazing mosaics of the Cathedral, which at first glance cannot be distinguished from painting, brought the masters of the Vatican worldwide fame.
Christian shrines are also kept here. At the tomb of the Apostle Peter, each newly elected pope spends the night praying to Peter for wisdom, patience and strength. The bronze statue of the Apostle was given the gift of healing and wish fulfillment. A fragment of the Cross of Christ, the lance of Longinus, the relics of saints and martyrs make thousands of pilgrims strive to this temple to kneel before miraculous relics.
