Temple of Saturn
Tempio di Saturno, Roman Forums, Roma, Lazio, Italy
Description:
The ancient Romans in general very often erected all kinds of buildings in honor of the gods who, as a sign of gratitude, protected the city from wars and other disasters. So it is not surprising that after such an important victory, the city authorities decided to pay tribute to Saturn, so that he would continue to preserve Rome from cataclysms.
From the temple, built in the form of a pseudoperipter, two podiums departed, separated from each other by a staircase, while they were decorated with impressive dimensions of the column in the Ionian style. The city treasury was once kept inside the Temple, along with accompanying profit and loss papers. Also here was a statue of the god of agriculture and gardening Saturn, which during the festive processions solemnly carried through the streets of Rome. For example, on December 17, a large-scale festival of Saturnalia was held near the Temple. Unfortunately, during its existence, the Tempio di Saturno has survived several fires, and even despite the restoration work, only a podium with a colonnade has survived to this day.
