Plaza de Spain
Piazza di Spagna, 1, Roma, Italy
Description:
Plaza de España is one of the most popular places in Rome among tourists. Adjacent to the square, Condotti Street is the center of fashion "shopping" - it is here that the so-called "Roman fashion quarter" is located, and with it many boutiques with exclusive clothes.
Plaza de España got its name from the Spanish Embassy, which has been operating here since the Middle Ages. At the beginning of the sixteenth century here, at the papal court, was built the palace of Spain. On the territory of the palace and the adjoining square, the power of the Spanish kings operated, so it is not surprising that soon all the houses in the district were inhabited by Spaniards. The dominant square is the Spanish Staircase, consisting of 138 steps.
