Colonna Square

Piazza Colonna, Rome, Italy

Description:

Colonna Square is located almost in the heart of Corso Street. Its dominant is the column of Marcus Aurelius. The Senate decided to install a column in memory of the emperor-philosopher, as well as to build a temple in his honor.

On the column of Marcus Aurelius was installed a statue of the emperor, made of bronze. The area of the column was created at the end of the XVI century by order of Pope Sixtus V. In 1577, between the column of Marcus Aurelius and the gallery of Alberto Sordi, a fountain was built on the square, the author of which was the architect Giacomo della Porta, who performed this work on the orders of Pope Gregory XIII. The base of the fountain is made in the form of a marble bowl from the island of Chios, decorated on the outside with sixteen vertical ribbons made of Carrara marble. The water originally came from the Aqua Virgo aqueduct. There are many shops around the square.
