Senate

Piazza del Campidoglio, 00186 Roma, Italia

Description:

Historically, this place has always been associated with the political life of the city. The palace was built as a state archive in 78 BC. The Senate Palace on Rome’s Capitol Square is now the seat of the mayor.

One of the seven hills on which the oldest city in the world, the Capitol, arose. On its top was built the medieval Senate Palace, in the ancient basement of which is part of the exposition of the famous Capitol Museum. With the fall of the Roman Empire, the palace fell into decline, and in the Middle Ages this building was used as a fortress. Pope Paul III invited the famous sculptor Michelangelo Buonarroti to restore the palace in 1538, whose creations were a fountain and a staircase. In the center of the fountain was installed a statue of jubilant Rome.

Construction and restoration work was also carried out by Giacomo Porta. According to his drawings, the current facade of the building was completed, and the entire complex of Capitol Square was completed in 1940. Today, tourists can enjoy the bell tower, which was destroyed by lightning, and then restored to the sketches of Martino Longi. In 1200, a bell was brought to Rome from Viterbo, and today it rings at the election of the capital's mayor.
