Via Margutta Street

Via Margutta, 00187 Roma, Italy

Description:

Rome is a city of amazing beauty, where you can find something on every street that attracts attention and leaves a mark on the memory for a long time. An example of one of the most memorable and soul-weaving streets is Via Margutta. It is cozy located right in the heart of the city, in the picturesque area of the Champ de Mars.

Versions of the origin of the street name are countless, but it is not known for certain which of them is true. It is possible that the name “Via Margutta” comes from the word “Marisgutia” (Goccia di Mare, which in Russian means “drop of sea water”).

Once upon a time, a very, very long time ago, Via Margutta was filled with all sorts of shops that belonged to artisans, houses of builders and marble workers.

Later, Via Margutta was chosen by artists who opened their workshops here. People of art at first were from among foreigners, and later among them appeared and non-resident Italians-creators of beauty.

Over time, the original buildings (various stables and benches) disappeared, supplanted by the abodes of art. During the time of Pope Pius the Ninth, Francesco de Mrode bought the nearby land, equipping the street with sewers and carrying out works that led to its modern appearance.

Now Via Margutta is a secluded quiet place where the walls of houses are buried in lush cascades of green plants.
