St. Lawrence Church
Via Palazzo di Citta, 4, 10122 Torino, Italy
Description:
The Church of St. Lawrence is one of the most beautiful churches in Turin, Italy. The old small Baroque church, restored in 1563, is famous for its luxurious interior decoration. It is located in the area of Castello Square.
The beautiful and extraordinary Church of St. Lawrence was built in 1666 as the royal chapel of the Princes of Savoy. It has no facade and looks like a normal building. The princes of Savoy decided that no other architectural element was to divert attention from the main symbols of royal power located on the Castello Square - Palazzo Reale and Palazzo Madama. But inside the Church of St. Lawrence amazes with the luxury of decoration. The Holy Shroud was kept in the church for some time, after it was transported from Chambery, France. Now there is a copy of the Shroud of Turin in life size. The church was designed by Guarino Guarini.
The cathedral has a booklet telling about the shroud in Russian - with all the information and facts relating to it. Every year, on May 4, the Feast of Friends of the Holy Shroud is held. Not far from the Dome Cathedral is a very famous museum of the Holy Shroud, where all historical materials, scientific research and various exhibits concerning this valuable Christian relic are collected.
