Porta Palazzo Square

Porta Palazzo, Torino, Italy

Description:

Porta Palazzo Square is a large square in the historic center of Turin on the border of two urban quarters - Centro and Aurora. Its area is 51,300 square meters, making it the largest square in Turin. The square is known for its market, the largest in Europe.

At the beginning of the XVIII century, Duke Vittorio Amadeo II began a great work on the reconstruction of the city. That's when the square was created. Since the middle of the XIX century, the space under the square was used to store ice brought from the neighboring Dora River and used by the city’s numerous public refrigerators.

In 1946, after the fall of the fascist dictatorship, Porta Palazzo took its present name. Currently, the square is the largest market in Europe, which is visited by about 100 thousand visitors a day. On its shelves, of which there are about 1000, you can buy fruits, vegetables, fish, meat, dairy products, flowers, clothes and much more. In most cases, traders in the market are immigrants from Africa, Asia, Latin America, which gives the market a certain exotic flavor. The symbol of the market is the Tettoia watch, created in 1916 and representing a typical example of a metal construction, often used at the time.
