Church of St. John the Merciful in Venice
Calle Crosera Dorsoduro, Castello District
Description:
Church in Venice, in the district of Castello. It was founded at the beginning of the VIII century. In the IX century it was rebuilt and determined to store the relics of St. John the Baptist. Now the church is known for the fact that it was baptized Antonio Vivaldi and Pietro Barbo, the future Pope Paul II.
The modern church building is made in a simple Gothic style. This was the result of another reconstruction made between 1475 and 1505. The church looks rather modest, concise, but at the same time does not lose its majesty and some monumentality.
In the chapel to the left of the main altar there is a triptych of Bartolomeo Vivarini “Madonna and Child, Saints John and Andrew”. The church also houses several works by famous masters Cima da Conegliano and Alvise Vivarini.
At present, the church keeps the incorruptible relics of the holy Patriarch of Alexandria John the Merciful, a thorn of the crown of thorns of the Savior, as well as a cross with particles of the Tree of the Holy Life-Creating Cross of the Lord, it was used during divine services by St. Sava the Sanctified.
