Q: In what architectural style were the main palaces of Venice built and who designed them?

Venetian Gothic, combining Byzantine and Moorish motifs, dominates the Palazzo Ducale and Ca' d'Oro. Giovanni and Bartolomeo Bon created the facade of the Doge's Palace with characteristic pointed arches. Pietro Lombardo, a representative of the early Renaissance, designed the Ca' Dandolo with classical colonnades. The XVI century Palazzo Grimani demonstrates the transition to Renaissance symmetry under the influence of Sanmicheli.

Q: Where to go in Venice with children to be interesting?

The Natural History Museum on the Grand Canal houses dinosaur skeletons and a collection of eighteenth-century shells. On the island of Murano, children watch the work of glass blowers whose traditions date back to 1291. The Venetian Arsenal, where military galleys were built, offers interactive models of ships. The puppet theater Carlo Gozzi holds performances based on the comedy del arte.

Q: Where in Venice to take the most atmospheric photos besides San Marco?

The small square of Santa Maria Formosa with the eponymous church of the IX century gives a perfect frame with a reflection in the water. Campo San Giacomo del Orio with a Gothic basilica of the XIII century creates an authentic Venetian background. The promenade of Zattere at sunset opens panoramas of the Grand Canal with silhouettes of gondolas. San Giorgio Maggiore Island with the Palladio Bell Tower offers views of the entire lagoon.

Q: What little-known sights of Venice do most tourists miss?

Scuola degli Schiavoni keeps a series of paintings by Vittore Carpaccio with stories about St. George (1502). The Church of San Zaccaria combines the Renaissance facade of Mauro Kodussi with Byzantine mosaics of the ninth century. In the Palazzo Contarini del Bovolo preserved spiral staircase of the XV century – a masterpiece of late Gothic. On the island of Torcello you can see the mosaics of the cathedral of the VII century, the same age as the Venetian Republic.

Q: What historical events are associated with Venetian sights?

The Bridge of Sighs connected the Doge’s Palace to the prison where Casanova and political prisoners of the Republic were held. In the basilica of Santi Giovanni e Paolo, 25 doges are buried, including Enrico Dandolo, the organizer of the Fourth Crusade. Founded in 1104, Arsenal became the world’s first state-owned shipbuilding complex. The Frari Church houses the tomb of Titian, who died during the plague of 1576.
