Embankment of Riva degli Schiavoni
Riva degli Schiavoni, Venezia, Italy
Description:
The embankment of Riva degli Schiavoni, founded in the 9th century, is the main promenade of Venice and one of its attractive attractions. It is named after the Slavic merchants who were engaged in the delivery of meat and fish to local piers.
Created on the mud deposits of the Grand Canal, the embankment today is one of the tourist centers with numerous souvenir shops and small shops. Walking along it, you can see many architectural sights, among which are the creations of the great Andrea Palladio.
You will be able to walk on several bridges, including the famous Ponte dei Sospiri, the Straw Bridge and the Bridge of Sighs, which received its name during the time when convicts were taken to prison under escort. You can also see the beautiful 15th century church of Santa Maria della Visitazione and the incredible number of bronze statues made by Ettore Ferrari in honor of the first king of Italy.
