St. Mark's Cathedral Campaign
Piazza San Marco, Venice, Italy
Description:
The campaign of St. Mark’s Cathedral is located in Piazza San Marco, in Venice. Built in the 16th century, this bell tower served as a beacon for ships that entered the lagoon. In the early 20th century, due to wear, earthquakes and lightning strikes, the bell tower collapsed. Restoration of Campanila was made in 1912, the structure was strengthened.
The 100-meter tower includes a brick shaft where in the Middle Ages there was a torture cage bell platform with 5 bells, the largest of which rang early in the morning and at lunchtime the observation deck. Campanila is crowned by a pyramidal spire with an early 16th century weather vane depicting a golden angel.
