Burano Island
7 km from the center of Venice, near Torcello
Description:
Burano, one of the islands of the Venetian lagoon, is famous for two things: colorful, cheerfully bright little houses and lace.
Exuberant multicolored buildings did not arise by chance. According to legend, fishermen returning from the sea, from afar recognized their homes by the color of the walls. Now there is no need for such clarity, and the bright beauty of pure, unadulterated colors, literally radiating positive, just pleases the eye in any weather.
The second curious attraction of the island is the traditional Venetian lace, known all over the world for its elegant patterns. Already in the Middle Ages, Italian lacemakers achieved virtuoso skill in this craft. Here, in Italy, originated and for centuries perfected techniques of weaving, which are now used everywhere. The virtuoso work of lacemakers can be simply admired, and you can buy products of skillful craftsmen, along with masks, which are also sold here.
