San Giorgio Maggiore Island

San Giorgio Maggiore, Venice, Italy

Description:

The island of San Giorgio Maggiore is an amazing place, which by its atmosphere can be called the center of philosophical life. There are no bars, restaurants or souvenir shops - here is the cathedral, opened in the early 17th century.

The island is most famous in the Venetian lagoon and, like its cathedral, is named after the church's first abbot, San Giorgio Maggiore. The cathedral was built between 1566 and 1610 by architect Andrea Palladio and was completed after his death. It is the main building on the island and can now be seen in all the paintings depicting the lagoon at the Doge’s Palace.

This is an amazing white temple, in the architecture of which the author reflects the history of the development of architecture and faith. This is evidenced by the pagan Greek portico superimposed on the facade of the early Christian basilica. Inside the temple is very light, thanks to this, its space visually becomes even larger. Here you can see magnificent paintings of the 15th-16th centuries, a wooden crucifix, carved benches of unique Flemish work of the 16th century and many other works of art.
