Santa Maria Assunta Cathedral
Via Torcello, 30175 Venezia VE, Italy
Description:
All the wealth of the Venetian-Byzantine cultural heritage was embodied in the magnificent Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta from the island of Torcello in Venice. According to the ancient inscription on the stone, the cathedral was built in 639 by the exarch of Ravenna.
To date, very little remains of the original construction - only the general plan of the cathedral, its central part and facade have been preserved. What causes a special delight both among tourists and connoisseurs of architecture and art of that period, is the unique mosaic that became the decoration of the cathedral. The arches of the altar part are dominated by compositions depicting Mary and the 12 apostles, there are mosaics depicting the Doomsday and a mosaic with the Virgin Mary and the baby.
With genuine interest, parishioners and guests of the city consider the marble ornament on the floor of the cathedral, as well as the patterned windows and openwork belfry arcade.
