Individual excursion with a professional guide
Description:
In the 9th and 13th centuries, Indochina was dominated by the Khmer Empire, one of the most powerful and talented peoples in the history of mankind. During this period, marked by a general political, cultural and artistic upsurge, Khmer urban art flourished, the most striking manifestation of which was the construction of temple complexes. Designed to be the abode of the immortal lords of heaven, these structures were built of brick and stone according to the rules of cosmic symbolism, which was to contribute to the fertility of the soil and the power of the state. The design of the temples, strictly corresponding to the symbolic and magical criteria, contributed to the descent of divine forces to the earth and the transformation of the ruler, playing the role of an intermediary, in the embodiment of the deity. The temples were inhabited by numerous statues of gods, and the walls were decorated with a rich floral ornament - an allegory of precious water, which the gods pour from heaven, and the king distributes on the ground. From all sides, these “devils of the gods” were surrounded by canals, water into which came with the help of complex hydraulic devices. Thanks to the well-established hydraulic system, the Angkor plain, located in the heart of the Khmer Empire, became one of the largest rice-growing regions in the world. In the 15th century, the territory of Angkor was captured by the Siamese. The political center of the Khmers was shifted to the southeast of the country. The country plunged into the abyss of medieval stagnation. And in Angkor, the power over the temples was seized by a lush tropical nature.
