Description:
The huge Imperial Palace in Beijing covers an area of 290 hectares, of which three-quarters is water. The palace complex consists of 3,000 buildings built over centuries of history, which began in 1153. It was then that the Jin dynasty made Beijing its capital, and as the main residence ordered the construction of the Golden Hill Palace.
In 1750, Emperor Qianlong wanted to expand the palace. Over the fifteen years of construction, 140 tons of silver were spent. Unfortunately, during the Second Opium War, the palace was badly damaged, and its gardens were almost completely destroyed by the British and French.
The Qing Dynasty was reluctant to tolerate such an insult, and in the years that followed it spent over 900 tons of silver on the reconstruction of the Imperial Palace.
