Daugava Embankment
Description:
Now the embankment of Daugava is a picturesque corner of Riga, where locals and tourists like to walk. But this type of embankment acquired only after reconstruction, which took place in 1945-1949, and from the 13th century until the beginning of the Second World War, this part of the embankment was the largest port of Riga.
Construction of the port began in the 13th century, and since then the port has developed rapidly and could serve more and more ships every year. In the 19th century, the importance of this port grew significantly, and it began to expand even faster, and work was also carried out to deepen the channel so that the port could serve not only river, but also sea vessels. By the beginning of the 20th century, the Riga port reached a length of 40 kilometers.
Unfortunately, when the Germans left the city in 1944, they blew up the entire embankment and now it can only be seen in photographs and paintings. In 1945, when the embankment began to be restored, it was decided to turn it into a walking area, so it was completely rebuilt.
