Marrakech for its own: a modern city
Description:
Most tourists see Morocco only from one side - amazing, medieval, fabulous. But in the ancient medina - no more than 8% of the urban population of the country. What about the others? The modern city, it would seem, lives a completely ordinary life, people work in offices, open their businesses, go to the movies and to exhibitions of modern art. But even modernity in this amazing country is colorful, unexpected and absolutely stunning. And this is what we will talk about – how modern society works, how the educational system, medicine, family institutions, what is the role of religion, art, how eco-technologies develop here and why a huge number of Europeans move to Morocco. And most importantly, how all this is combined with the traditional way of life and belief in genies. We're sure you'll be very surprised.
We will meet you in an area built during the French protectorate in the early XX century. Here is the focus of art and design galleries, fashion cafes and restaurants and fashion boutiques. And we're going to visit a lot of them. After all, it is absolutely impossible to avoid, for example, a magnificent gallery of designer exquisitely luxurious lamps, whose customers include kings, princes and just exceptionally wealthy people from all over the world.
And how to get past luxury fashion boutiques, in which every thing – from the national caftan to dresses that are absolutely relevant in European culture – is a work of art? These things, of course, are very expensive. But we will tell you one secret that every modern Moroccan lady who follows the style knows - in a small courtyard, which is not easy to find, one of the best boutiques in the city with very reasonable prices is hiding. However, a few more secrets at the meeting we will reveal to you: We’ll talk about raffia and jute clothing, eco-technologies and modern craft, where the Maghreb sorcerers came from, and of course, what it’s like to be a woman here today.
We will also visit several contemporary art galleries. It grew out of the synthesis of numerous cultures that interacted on the territory of this country for more than a millennium - the art of Central Africa, Arab, Berber and European. And the result was extremely interesting.
Be sure to go to one of the best antique shops in the city - behind a modest showcase hidden from random passers-by real caves Ali Baba, where you can spend at least a week. The names of some customers of this boutique you regularly meet in the media. You will see the unique interiors, literally saved by the owner of the gallery from the hotel Mamunia during its “restoration”. Let’s talk about one of the not-so-common local design trends: Consider the magnificent ancient jewelry. Did you know that each of them has not only decorative, but, above all, pragmatic and purely functional meaning?
We will wander around the galleries, look for samples of Art Deco interiors, and in breaks we will try a lot of local sweets, drink excellent wine, try oysters and sea urchins right on the market, find a book cafe and even climb on the roof of one of the buildings and admire the modern city from above. You will learn where it makes sense to try the author’s cuisine and great cocktails, how to choose Moroccan wine and where jam sessions are arranged in the evening. And all this time we will tell you about today and tomorrow of this beautiful country, which, we are sure, you will love even more after this tour.
