Hustai National Park

95 km west of Ulaanbaatar

Description:

One hundred kilometers west of Ulaanbaatar is the Hustai National Park, opened in 1860. It was here, in the Mongolian steppes, that Russian scientist and traveler N.M. Przhevalsky discovered an ancient species of horse, which received the name of its discoverer. Today, on the territory of more than 50,000 hectares in natural conditions lives the largest population of these rare endangered animals.

At one time, Hustai was created as a huge natural zoo, with the main goal of maintaining and increasing the population of Przewalski’s horse. Several individuals are found in many zoos in the world, but in fact they are all representatives of their kind.

The Tahoe horse is not found in the wild today, and the goal of the reserve is to gradually introduce them to the eastern region of Mongolia. But in addition to the first 200 individuals living freely in this area, many other mammals and birds live here.

On the territory of the park there are walking tours, routes by jeep and horseback riding. In addition to natural beauties, it will be interesting to see the ruins of an ancient Buddhist temple and archaeological monuments of the XIII-XIX centuries. The cost of entering the territory costs about five dollars.
