Ongi Monastery
Description:
In the mountain-covered part of northern Mongolia are the remains of the once majestic Ongiin Hiid monastery. Danzan Ravjaa, a famous Mongolian enlightener of the XIX century, was trained here. Today services are held here in dilapidated adobe buildings.
During the repressions, the monastery was almost completely destroyed and for a long time the remains of monastic utensils, sacred texts, sculptures and statues could be found on the ground. Today all this is in the museum at the monastery. But the largest fragments still lie in the sand.
At 3.5 km upstream on the left bank of the Ongiin River, there is a small cave 10-15 meters long, which can only be climbed squatting, but then a spacious hall begins. Locals say that on the walls of the cave before you could see the drawings.
