Ovgon Monastery

Located in the mountains of Hogno Khan 257 km from Ulaanbaator on the road to Arvaiheer, 173 km from Arvaiheer, about 75 km from Harhorin

Description:

Ovgon Monastery was built by Zanabazar in honor of his teacher. This place was one of his favorites. The main temple is located on a steep rock to which stone steps lead. Nearby, literally 15 meters away is a birch grove. The curved yellow roof of the Buddhist monastery looks especially incredible against the background of typically Russian trees.

Like many Buddhist temples, the monastery of Ovgon was destroyed and rebuilt only the lower monastery. The upper buildings and temples are in ruins and are now abundantly overgrown. Although the remains of the stone walls still look very impressive. The Lower Monastery today is an active abode.

The area of the monastery Ovgon is a unique natural place. Not only do our Russian birches grow here, but there is also the only grove of wild apricots and Japanese cherries in Mongolia.
