Lake Terhiin Tsagaan
foothills of Hangai, central part of Mongolia
Description:
Lake Terkhin Tsagaan was formed by the confluence of the rivers of the North and South Terkhin, which the eruption of the volcano blocked the natural channel. This mountain lake is located at an altitude of 2060 meters above sea level. The lake is framed by several extinct volcanoes, and their activity at one time very transformed the surrounding landscape.
The North Shore is very steep. It was formed as a result of the eruption of the volcano Togoo, when the flow of lava reached the water, and froze. In the eastern part, you can see the frozen cone of the dilapidated volcano Horgo Ul, which left behind huge black pumice fields.
As a result of active volcanic activity, rocky cliffs were formed on which nothing grows, and numerous deep caves. In some places discovered deposits of precious stones of volcanic origin.
About ten rivers and streams flow into the lake, maintaining a stable water level and a depth of about 20 meters. Tourists are attracted here not only picturesque landscapes and crystal clear comfortable water for swimming, but also all kinds of fish, which are found here in huge numbers. However, as well as the entire area around the lake, it is considered a specially protected area, and for a visit you will need to pay 3,000 tugrik per hiker and 1,000 per car.
