Stalin Monument in Ulaanbaatar

Chinggis Khan Ave, Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia

Description:

The monument to Stalin appeared in Ulaanbaatar in 1951. The monument began its life path at the Leningrad Foundry, where it was created under the leadership of the outstanding Soviet sculpture Nikolai Tomsky.

Subsequently, despite Nikita Khrushchev’s personal request, the Mongolian government refused to dismantle the monument. Thanks to this decision, the monument managed to stand in front of the Mongolian National Library until 1990. The split of the USSR put an end to the further fate of the monument, after which it was demolished. Religious Mongols even held a rite of propitiation for the monument, in case the spirit of Stalin decides to return.

But despite all efforts, the four-meter monument to Stalin returned: in 2001 it was bought by the owner of the Mongolian cafe "Ismus", where it stands to this day.
