Freshwater Lake Har Nuur

Hara-Nur, Hovd, Mongolia

Description:

On the border of Mongolia and Russia there is a unique natural formation - the Kotlovina of large lakes. 5000 years ago it was one huge lake, which over time due to the arid climate broke up into several separate bodies of water. Here in a small area there are all kinds of natural zones that make each lake unique. So, Har-Nuur can be called the most unusual in the whole valley.

Har-Nuur until 1989 was called Hara-Nur, which can be translated as "Black Lake". This unusual color of water is caused by volcanic activity, which once greatly changed the terrain. The lake essentially consists of two parts - freshwater Har Nuur and salty Durgen Nuur, connected by ducts. With the lakes Airag-Nuur and Khyargas-Nuur it is connected by the rivers Geliin-Gol and Dzabhan.

The shores of the lake are quite low and winding, convenient for parking. In the deltas of the rivers abundantly overgrown reeds. On the right bank of the lake, huge sandy massifs of Gobi-Altai begin. The lake is extremely rich in fish, there is a rare Mongolian harius.
