Ulaanbaatar

Uran-Togoo volcano

aymak Bulgan, northern Mongolia

Description:

Several thousand years ago, many volcanoes acted on the territory of Mongolia, changing the appearance of mountains by their eruptions, turning river beds, and creating new rocky gorges with many caves. Now all the volcanoes are old and extinct.

One such ancient volcano is Uran-Togoo Tulga Uul. It is located about 60 kilometers west of the city of Bulgan. From afar, it can be mistaken for a tree-covered hill, but if you climb its gently slope, you will find yourself on the edge of a huge funnel. Now the crater on the east side is densely overgrown with trees, but from the west it is quite a comfortable descent through the grass. The foot of the volcano is one of the tourist stops for traveling in jeeps.

Today Uran-Togoo Tulga Uul is a specially protected natural area and a natural monument.
