Chingeltei District, Juulchid Streed, 38

About the company:

The Museum of Fine Art named after Zanabadzar was founded in 1965, and in 1985, on the occasion of the 350th anniversary of Zanabadzar, an outstanding sculptor and founder of Mongolian portrait painting, the museum was renamed in his honor.

The building in which the museum is located was built in the early XX century and is one of the first two-storey houses of the Russian type in Urga. It was built by a Russian merchant, but did not live here long. For many years, the building "nomadic" - for some time it belonged to a Chinese bank, then it was given to the headquarters of the Soviet military contingent, in the 30s of the XX century it housed a central store, and in the 60s - the Union of Artisans. And only in 1966 the building was transferred to the newly created Museum of Fine Arts.

Currently, more than 18 thousand exhibits are stored in the museum funds. Permanent exhibitions are devoted to the life and work of Zanabadzar, early medieval art, religious painting-tank, applications, Mongolian-Tibetan printing, etc. It is the largest repository of Mongolian art in the world.

Exhibits of the museum were shown abroad more than once: in 1994, for the first time, a major Western European exhibition "Mongolian Treasures" was held at the Paris Museum of Oriental Arts, as well as exhibitions are regularly held in the Netherlands, USA, Korea, China, Germany, Spain and Japan.
