Kendowji National Botanical Garden

Pyin Oo Lwin, located about 69 km northeast of Mandalay.

Description:

Kendouja National Botanical Garden is the country’s premier botanical garden, originally known as the Government Botanical Garden of Myanmar. The garden was laid in 1915 by forester Alex Roger, assisted by amateur gardener Charlotte Wheeler Kaffe.

Official recognition was given by the government two years later, and in 1924 the gardens were declared a forest reserve and placed under the care of the Ministry of Forestry.

As in other botanical gardens of the world, the facilities of the Botanical Garden of Myanmar are multifunctional. First of all, the garden provides a pleasant atmosphere for the recreation of local residents and foreign tourists. The garden also acts as a habitat for rare and endangered plant species that highlight the garden’s role in biodiversity conservation.

Researchers, both local and foreign, can take advantage of the plant collections available here to obtain samples for scientific research. The garden also plays an important educational function - teaching visitors to appreciate trees, forests, birds and the environment in general. At the attractive Ecotourism Centre, everyone can get the necessary comprehensive information on this issue, which contributes to the development of ecotourism in Myanmar.
