Bagaya Monastery in Mandalay

Kyaukse, Mandalay

Description:

Bagaya Chiaoun is one of the largest and most ancient wooden monasteries in Myanmar. It is located in the small town of Amarapura, near Mandalay. The monastery was founded in the early XIX century by King Mindon.

A distinctive feature of the monastery is that most of its buildings are made of teak. There are stone structures, but there are few. The main element of the monastery is the so-called red pagoda, a 15-meter building with red roofs.

The monastery houses an extensive collection of small Buddha statues. Bagaya is a popular tourist destination and the object of worship of Buddhist pilgrims.
