Egypt creates low-cost airline to transport tourists to the Red Sea
Egypt is discussing ways out of the crisis of the tourism sector.
According to the local federation of hoteliers, the situation is critical. For example, in Marsa Alam closed more than 70 hotels; in February, the resort opened 8 hotels, their load is not more than 30%.
Hurghada hoteliers believe that the main factor for the return of tourists is affordable transportation. It is proposed to expand the geography of EgyptAir routes to Hurghada in the country and beyond. We are talking about the launch of direct flights from Alexandria, and regular EgyptAir flights from Germany, Italy and other countries.
In the 2021/22 season, budget transportation from Europe to the Red Sea resorts will increase: EgyptAir creates its low-cost airline. The low-cost airline will start operating in the winter season 21/22 and will compete with foreign charters.
The basis of the fleet of the future Egyptian low-cost airline based on EgyptAir can be aircraft that, due to the reduction of the foreign route network, the lead carrier does not use.
For example, B737-800 (144 seats) or roomy B777-300 (350 seats). In the last 1-2 years, EgyptAir has been betting on Airbus family aircraft: the A320-NEO is involved on the Cairo-Moscow-Cairo route.
In theory, the future Egyptian low-cost airline will be able to fly to Russia, but under the conditions: the resumption of direct flights from the cities of the Russian Federation to Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikh, obtaining permission to perform regular flights.
Foreign airlines cannot operate charter flights to carry Russian citizens. This is possible only in the status of regular flights on a parity basis, experts say.
Russian airlines operated regular flights to Egyptian resorts until November 2015. If the regular flights to Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikh begin, Egyptian airlines (including low-cost airlines) will be able to fly to Russia on parity terms.
