World Health Organization calls for lifting travel restrictions
The World Health Organization (WHO) has called on countries to ease restrictions on international travel.
WHO believes that existing restrictions have proven ineffective in practice.
The tenth meeting of the Emergency Committee convened by the Director-General of WHO in accordance with the International Health Regulations (2005) (IHR) in connection with the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) was held on 13 January 2022.
On January 19, a statement with the recommendations of the committee was published on the WHO website. These recommendations are critical for countries.
WHO calls for lifting bans on international travel They do not provide additional benefits and exacerbate economic and social stress.
“The failure of travel restrictions imposed following detection and reporting of the omicron strain to contain its international spread demonstrates the ineffectiveness of such measures over time, mask wearing, testing, isolation/quarantine and vaccination should be based on risk assessment and avoid imposing additional burdens on international travellers,” the WHO said in a statement.
WHO urges states to recognize all vaccines approved by the organization, but points out that countries should not require proof of COVID-19 vaccination for international travel as a condition that allows entry into the country.
