Amsterdam

Amsterdam for your own: a walk with a sailor

Description:

A city created on water under the piercing and free winds of the North Sea. Its streets were always filled with brave captains and desperate adventurers, travelers, merchants and other wandering people. It smelled of freedom, thirst for new discoveries, adventure and, yes, wealth. And one of the main characters here has always been the sailors. Let us look at our beloved city through the eyes of a sea wolf, walk with him along the narrow old streets and embankments of canals through distance and time, see the heyday and not the easiest times in the life of Amsterdam, grieve and laugh with him. In the end, we will be friends with this city forever.

On this tour we will travel through time and see Amsterdam through the eyes of a sailor. Eyes that remember the brightest events and terrible fires, steep ups and hurtful falls in the life of the city. We will go for a walk in places where the sailor could find work and entertainment, shelter and comfort. Find out what and how he ate and drank, and try something.

We will learn how ordinary fishermen lived and settled and what palaces outstanding admirals built for themselves. We will see where ships were built and guns weighed. Let’s figure out what sailors from China brought with them to Amsterdam, to what distant countries and why all the sailing youth of the seventeenth century dreamed of going, and that hemp is for ropes and strings.

The sailors of Amsterdam changed rapidly, but the spirit of freedom and the thirst for discovery remained forever in this city, although the sea pages of the history of the capital are already in the past. This tour is about the attitude to freedom, water, knowledge, overseas travel and how they influenced modern Amsterdam.
