Amsterdam for its own: Westerdocks, Nord and the flea market. Walk through a non-tourist city
Description:
Today we will go with you to one of our favorite neighborhoods. Here fabulous old houses with front gardens, old warehouses and cozy canals coexist with amazing modern architecture and the latest technologies. Old traditions are preserved here, but they live in the future. This is such an amazing place these West Docks.
We will walk around this beautiful neighborhood with legends, secrets and funny stories. Let’s find out why the city does not like submarines. Let’s talk about unusual social housing and antisquats. And how Amsterdam turned the industrial zone into a modern and fashionable neighborhood. In the darkness of the old cinema, we will drink coffee, and then find beautiful examples of modern style. Find out where cats live and where hippos live. And we will definitely look at many unusual shops and galleries.
And then we take the ferry to the old shipyard. Enjoy stunning views from the river to the amazing modern building of the Eye Film Museum, as well as swim past an abandoned submarine. We will see unusual container houses. We will tell you interesting facts from the history of Amsterdam, we will reveal the secret why carrots are orange, and what happened to people who have large windows in their homes.
If we are lucky, we will enter Europe’s largest flea market, which operates once a month in an old shipyard. Here you can find an insane number of interesting things: English porcelain, Indian Christmas toys, vinyl records, inlaid dressers, beer bar signs and much more. This is a real paradise for antiquarians, artists and diligent hostess!
And if the day is not market, then we will go to look at graffiti, find a hidden city of artists and designers, drink champagne “behind the garages” and find out what amazing places in the Netherlands arrange hotels.
After the tour, you can ride on the highest swings in the Netherlands or go to the EYE cinema museum, where the archive of films is stored, ranging from the first silent films of the XIX century to modern, striking viewers with powerful special effects. The museum also has a very interesting collection of old and new posters, photos and soundtracks. And most importantly, there are many interactive installations that will not only introduce you to different films, but also make you feel like a child in Wonderland. And then you can take a breath in a cafe with amazing panoramic views of the city.
