"Holland for his own": Giethoorn and surroundings. Dutch idyll

Description:

The village of Giethoorn is one of the most idyllic places in the country. Since the XIII century, among other things, peat mining was done here. As a result, lakes were formed. And they dug canals to transport peat. But who in the Netherlands will surprise with channels? Surprisingly, in the old part of the village there are no other ways of communication at all. The only way to get to the house is by boat. For a little more than two and a half thousand inhabitants there are more than 180 bridges. So we will take a boat – a flat-bottom, canoe, kayaking or a quiet motor – and swim slowly along the channels drowning in greenery and flowers, admiring pastoral landscapes and looking at charming houses with reed-covered roofs, we will listen to birds, of which there are an inconceivable number, and sometimes stop at cafes or shops descending to the water with all sorts of stuff. The nervous system of such a walk restores the pure visit of the most fashionable psychotherapist: And also - around the village a whole necklace of picturesque lakes, which are great for fishing and walking on a water bike. And a bunch of museums: mineralogical, ethnographic, automotive, diving and ceramics museum.

It’s also delicious – almost everywhere. We will try the boiled eel, the famous herring and “cheeks” of cod, waffles and pies baked in front of us, farm ice cream and cheeses – oh, what cheeses here! Many of them are only sold in Giethoorn. And you and I can taste everything.
We gotta go!

In addition:
If you have the strength, after Giethhorn, you and I can go to Urk. This village was once located on an island. And only in the seventies of the last century it became part of the land. Therefore, the dialect, traditions, way of life are preserved here to a greater extent. In Urk still live fishing - you will see in the harbor and sailing fishing boats, and old shipyards, and a lighthouse. See how the fish die and how wooden boats are repaired. Needless to say, you can taste fresh catch immediately in the harbor. Of course, no one here goes from morning to night in national costumes and clumps. But it's all nonsense. In the spirit of Urk is a real fishing village. Fortunately, not too spoiled by tourists. What can I say, we have to go. Until the others sniffed:
