"Holland for its own": Haarlem, protected sand dunes and the North Sea coast
Description:
If you want to relax from the bustle of the city, walk slowly among the pine trees, lakes and sand dunes, and time is very little, then there is nothing better than to go on a beautiful walk from Haarlem - whether by bicycle, though by bus, and even on foot - to the coast of the North Sea.
We will meet at Haarlem Central Station, built in Art Nouveau style, and head to the central square of Grote Markt. Here the main attractions of the city - the building of the town hall, the guild of butchers, a complex of museums of modern art, and, of course, the Cathedral of St. Bavo, surrounded by small cozy restaurants.
On Saturdays, the square looks especially atmospheric: it is here, under the walls of the majestic cathedral, that the main grocery market of Haarlem spreads, where you can taste delicious homemade cheeses, bread, chocolate, fruits and the famous Dutch herring under the bell. I'm going to tell you the history of these places, talk about amazing urban legends and the greatest hoax associated with Haarlem. Look at the organ that Mozart played as a child and find out where the artist Frans Hals is buried.
Then we take a bus or take bicycles and go to Zandvoort en Z along a picturesque road that runs through sand dunes and pine forest. I'm going to show you the city, tell you about its people and their traditions, and then we're going to the beach. On the way we will look for interesting street sculptures of bathers, couples, flower girls, installed in the most unexpected places of this wonderful city.
Along the coast we will walk to the incredibly beautiful Sand Dune National Park South Kennemerland. Our route will pass through beautiful lakes, Bockedorns forest and sand fields, where you can see birds, Scottish highland cows, as well as many rabbits living in thorn bushes. From time to time we will stop in the most beautiful places for small picnics, after which we will return to Zandvoort by another, but no less picturesque road.
