St. Servatius Cathedral (Sint Servaasbasiliek)

Description:

On the Vrijthof square is the Cathedral of St. Servas (Sint Servaasbasiliek), founded in 1039, on the site of the burial of the first bishop of the Netherlands. The majestic cathedral is built in the Romanesque style with crypts and a treasury, which stores things directly related to the name of the bishop (his remains, portrait, cup and staff), as well as unique collections of paintings and silk. Nearby is a beautiful Gothic church Sint Janskerk, (pictured in red) dating from the XIII century, with wall paintings in the form of Christian symbols. The tower of the church, which is 70 meters high, offers a panoramic view of Maastricht and its surroundings. Organ concerts are held on Saturdays.
