National Museum of Machado de Castro

Largo Doutor Jose Rodrigues 68, Coimbra, Portugal

About the company:

The National Museum of Machado de Castro, located in the Portuguese city of Coimbra, has the largest collection of sculptures among all the national museums of the country. It is located in the medieval Episcopal Palace and in the building of the Church of St. John of the XI-XII centuries. The museum was named in honor of the Portuguese sculptor Joaquimi Machado di Castro.

The museum expositions introduce visitors to the art of Portugal. Among the exhibits you can see objects of the Roman period: sarcophagi, artifacts found during archaeological excavations, a large collection of stone and wooden sculptures of the Romanesque and Gothic style, furniture and everyday life.

Separately, it is worth noting the collection of works of religious art brought from churches and religious institutions of the country. The most valuable exhibits of this collection are the chapel of the XII century with images of Jesus Christ, the apostles and evangelists and the gift-bearer from the treasury of Queen Elizabeth of Portugal, made of gold and silver.
