In the north of the capital
Description:
We invite you all to an informative and visually rich, but tireless excursion north of Lisbon. During these few hours, you will see a series of different eras and key moments in the history and culture of the country.
Since the trip is long, we will start from the most remote place – the city of Fatima. A large field that became a temple; amazing phenomena to three young children in the early 20th century that changed the life of the country; the power of faith and miracles of healing. Hundreds of people come here every day, and on the main holidays, everyone can not even enter the city. Services are held in many languages and candles never go out. Even if you are completely non-religious, or if you have a different faith, you should see it and learn it. And then into the depths of history, to the 14th century, to Batalha! The main battle for the independence of the country, the change of dynasties, the first royal tomb of Portugal - this is all Batalha.
Lace, “joyful” Gothic, the birth of a new Manueline style and its heyday, ancient stained glass windows and the tomb of an unknown soldier – this is also in the Batalha Monastery, a UNESCO monument since 1989. Let’s dive into history and the next town. We are waiting for Alcobasa, a magnificent monastery of the 12th-18th centuries, also a UNESCO monument. A mixture of styles and eras; grand kitchens, where they cooked for 1000 people; a courtyard of silence and special doors to the refectory. But it is not only the monastic life and architecture that will be discussed here. In this temple are buried the local Romeo and Juliet of the 14th century, quite possibly became the prototypes of literary heroes. The story of Pedro and Ines has stirred the imagination of many artists and playwrights for 6 centuries. The tombstones of the middle of the 14th century are unique examples of small Gothic plastic. Already a little tired and hungry we go to the ocean coast, to the former fishing village of Nazaré. Freshly caught seafood and fish in an endless series of coastal restaurants are at our service. But after lunch (or a light snack - as you decide yourself) - climb the cliff, into a small cave and a beautiful temple of the 17th century to see a particularly revered statuette of St. Mary Nazareth.
Our final point is the medieval town of the Portuguese queens – Obidos, with its feminine comfort, flowers, an abundance of ceramics and other souvenirs. **Note: where to stay longer, and where to look fluently - we will decide together, based on your preferences.
