A Journey Through the Middle Ages

Description:

We go back to the Middle Ages of Portugal. In Tomar, we will try to understand what unites the history of Portugal with the mysterious history of the Templars. In Batalha we will visit the Dominican Abbey of Santa Maria da Victoria. The city of Alcobasa will acquaint us with the love story of Pedro and Ines, and in Obidoush we are waiting for a holiday city!

Now a few details.

Tomar. A city where every stone bears witness to many years of Portuguese history. The layout of the city has the shape of a cross, the ends of which face the four parts of the world, and in the crossroads lies the Republic Square. Accordingly, there are also the main monuments of the city, the capital of the Templars, in particular monasteries: the Monastery of the Order of Christ is addressed to the West; the Monastery of Santa Iria is addressed to the East; the Monastery of Anunciada to the North and the Monastery of San Francisco to the South.

Battle. Leaving the freeway, you can see how suddenly in the distance on the horizon appears the Monastery of Santa Maria da Vitoria. King Joan first ordered the construction of this building in memory of the brilliant victory over the Spaniards at Aljubarrota. This victory allowed the Portuguese to gain the freedom they had longed for. Around the monastery grew the city of Batalha.

Due to its monumentality and rich decoration, the Monastery of Batalha is undoubtedly one of the most striking examples of Gothic architecture in Portugal.

ALCOBASA. Rapid progress has left no trace in this city, which got its name from the magical confluence of the two rivers Alcoa and Basa, on the banks of which its houses stretch.

The city is dominated by the Monastery of Real Abadia de Santa Maria de Alcobaza, whose construction began in 1178.

This monastery will tell us about the eternal love of Pedro and Ines.

Frustration. The ancient city of Obidos served as an important seaport in ancient times, but over time the river that connected the port with the sea changed its course, and this permanently deprived the population of the city of its former functions. However, his other characteristic remains: Óbidos has long been called the "city of weddings." After King Dinis offered his bride Isabella a small posad Óbidos as a wedding gift, all Portuguese kings began to spend their honeymoons here, of course, this had a positive effect on the fate of the city. Currently, Obidush is a picturesque complex of whitewashed houses decorated with bright flowers and standing on narrow medieval streets, surrounded by mighty fortress walls.

However, a traveler approaching the city through the lush greenery of the countryside, with white spots of windmills, first of all draws attention to a landmark that is impossible not to notice - a mighty castle, as if standing guard over a cluster of human buildings.

The final chord of our trip will be the taste of cherry liquor, which is drunk from checolade cups.
