Tomar, Batalha, Nazareth, Alcobasa, Obidos
Description:
In today’s small town called “Brothers”, translated into Russian Tomar, we will always expect the appearance of a knight from some white angle. After all, in a sunny country, houses like to paint white with a blue border around the windows. If we do not see a knight, so imagine him while we wander through the numerous cloisters of the majestic Monastery of the Order of Christ, which was erected there in the XII century by frightening monks of the Order of the Templars. In the central part of the city stands one of the oldest synagogues, which has survived since the XIV century. You will know what events are related to your story.
In the city of Batalha you will see the Abbey of Santa Maria da Victoria. A real masterpiece of Portuguese Gothic architecture absorbed both the Manueline style and English Gothic. It is time to hear the story of the new royal dynasty – the Avis dynasty, and why the first king of this kind took Don Philip as his legal wife, and in memory of what victory the construction of this miracle was started by King João I of the XIV century. The monastery is one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal.
In the city of Alcobasa in the XII century, the construction of the Cistercian Abbey and the church began, where Don Pedro I and his beloved Ines de Castro were later buried. They are the most romantic and tragic royal couple of Portugal - the Portuguese "Romeo and Juliet". There are three things you can look at endlessly: fire, water and the sarcophagi of Padra and Inesh. Their beauty is beyond words. You will hear the most impressive legend passed from word of mouth for seven centuries! This monastery has also been chosen as one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal.
If you want to dilute the past with the present, then we will turn to the ocean, in Nazaré, a nice fishing town with a wonderful beach (where, for example, you can dine with fresh seafood and ocean fish), which has not lost its bright national features. And today you can see fishermen and their wives laying fresh fish for drying. In the center of Nazaré rises a rock, 100-meter height, from where you can see a truly fascinating panoramic view of the vast ocean. This point on the map is known for its highest waves in the world. It is off the coast of Nazareth that surfers set new world records, conquering waves more than 30 meters high! And again legends about the outfits of local beauties and about the black Madonna and about the city itself.
Going to Obidos you will find yourself in a medieval, real fairy tale. Be sure, you will not be able to walk around this place and not survive the old days of this town, preserving a centuries-old history in the middle of its fortress walls. At one time, they served as a defensive structure for the city. Hence the name of the city: Oppidum from Latin translates as “fortress” or “fortified city”.
The hallmark of the town is the long wall of the castle Obidos, built around whitewashed low houses, whose corners are painted blue or yellow, or have characteristic medieval features. In 2007, the city of Obidos received the honorary title of one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal.
In this zone, thanks to its special microclimate, the best wild cherries of Europe grow, from which the best cherry liqueur is produced! This drink has an intense and alluring aroma of sweet cherry. In this fabulous town, cherry liqueur is traditionally served in tiny chocolate cups. And you need to act on the principle: drank the contents with a glass.
