Lisbon

Tomar - the mysteries of the Templars

Description:

On this trip we will see the northern surroundings of Lisbon - small towns and villages, eucalyptus plantations, cork oak planting, pine groves and vineyards. Such a picturesque road we will first get to the fortress of the XII century. on the river Tagus-Almurol, which can only be reached by small boat. After wandering through the fortress and remembering its history, we will go to the ancient and most important Tamliere commandership in Portugal - the convention of the city of Tomara.

Tomar Fortress with a large complex of monastic premises, an ancient round temple and the remains of the palace of Henry the Navigator is the most intricate and peculiar construction of knightly Portugal. How the Templars came to this country, how they were able to become so powerful that they were destroyed and how this order was transformed - all this we will discuss, wandering through a rather intricate complex. And of course - there you can see the hallmark of Portuguese architecture - its Manueline style, the style of the Great Discoveries.

After visiting this complex, we will go down to the city, have lunch or have a snack (optional) in a small typical restaurant. We will walk through the main square and small medieval streets, go to the ancient synagogue of the XV century (if you wish), and then visit the tomb of the Grand Masters - the temple of Santa Maria de Olival, built according to a special system in the XII century and storing memorial signs and unique sculptures. Then we return to the region of Greater Lisbon, with delivery to the hotel.
