The Jesuit Church of Lisbon

2715-311 Lisbon region, Portugal

Description:

The Jesuit Church of St. Roch is located in Lisbon, the capital of Portugal. It is named after St. Roch, the protector against the plague. The church was built in 1555-1619 on the site where until the XVI century there was a cemetery for plague victims and was the first Jesuit church in Portugal.

According to Jesuit tradition, the church has a very modest appearance and luxurious interior decoration. The beautiful main altar is decorated with sculptures of the most famous figures of the Jesuit Order. The interior of the church is made of valuable wood, ivory, marble and precious minerals: jasper, agate, lapis lazuli, amethyst. The church also has a rich collection of church utensils and robes.

The structure of the church includes the chapel of John the Baptist, erected in 1742. It was created in Italy by famous sculptors and architects, and then transported to Portugal in three ships. The chapel is decorated with valuable mosaic panels that depict biblical scenes. There are also tiled panels created in 1584 in the style of Portuguese majolica.
