Jerónimos Monastery

R. dos Jer nimos 3, 1400 Lisboa, Portugal

Description:

The monastery of Jerónimos is considered the architectural pearl of the Portuguese capital. Here, literally every detail commands the imagination with its grandeur, festiveness, solemnity.

In the 16th century, on the orders of King Manuel I the Lucky, the construction of the Jeronimos Monastery began, in gratitude to the Virgin Mary for the safe completion of Vasco da Gama's voyage. The castle is made in the traditional Manueline style, combining Gothic style, Moorish influence and even Renaissance elements. Previously, there was a small chapel in honor of St. Mary. Now it has grown into a great temple. Engravings in the Church of St. Mary depict scenes from the life of St. Jerome. In the interior there is a magnificent stonework.

Within the walls of the Jerónimos Monastery are buried many outstanding figures, including Vasco da Gama, poets Herculano and Fernando Pessoa, Luis Kamoens. In 1984, the monastery of Jerónimos was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
