April 25th Bridge
Description:
The 25th April Bridge is one of the twenty longest suspension bridges in the world, crossing the confluence of the Tagus River into the Atlantic Ocean and connecting Lisbon on the north (right) and Almada on the south (left) bank.
It was opened on August 6, 1966. Until 1974, the bridge was named after Antonio Salazar, a Portuguese statesman and politician, but was later renamed.
Construction work was led by the American Bridge Building Company. The cost of construction of the bridge amounted to 32 million US dollars, 263,000 m³ of concrete and 72,600 tons of steel were used in the construction process.
The total length of the bridge is 2,277.64 meters, every day about 380,000 people cross the bridge in both directions.
Scenes from several well-known films were shot on the bridge, including the sixth James Bond film On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969), the only one in which George Lazenby played the main role.
For passenger cars, the passage on the bridge in the north direction (to Lisbon) is paid and is 1.40 euros.
